Fundations Level 2 - Unit 1
Fundations practice worksheets:
The attached file explains the phonics concepts that will be reviewed in Unit 1 and offers some practice worksheets (which may be done in class) as well as methods to practice at home.
In Units 1 - 5 emphasis is put on closed syllable which makes the vowel sound short (Think: apple, Ed, itch, octopus, up). A closed syllable has a vowel "guarded" by one or more consonants after it. A closed syllable word does not need a consonant before the vowel, only after it. Examples of closed syllables are: at, mat, math, mast, or even clash.
Closed syllable concepts reviewed in Unit 1 include:
Diagraph - Two letter that make one sound like, "sh" in the word ship.
Consonant blend - Two or three consonant that are grouped together but each make their own sound. For example, trip (tr) and strip (str).
Diagraph blend - As in the word lunch, the letter n blends with the diagraph "ch"
Blending and Segmenting - Blending up to six letter sounds and the ability to break the sounds in the word up.
Lastly, when to use the consonant letters c, k or ck in a word for the /k/ sound. The letter C usually is at the beginning of a word, unless it is followed by an e, i or y. CK is used after a short vowel (chicken) and K after a consonant (bunk).
